Tasting Notes: Vosne-Romanée wines are distinguished by their depth, finesse, and elegance. While the nose reveals delicate aromas of red and black berries, dominated by cherry. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and structured, with subtle spice, excellent concentration, and a refreshing vibrancy that leads to a long, refined finish. Aged in oak barrels for 18 months (30% new barrels).

The Estate: Nestled between Dijon and Beaune, Vosne-Romanée is one of the world’s most renowned wine-growing communes. Protected by the Côte from west winds, its vineyards face the rising sun, stretching from the church to the priory of St. Vivant. Domaine René Cacheux is tiny - just 3.26 hectares - but they have some very fine vineyards including 1 hectare of Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots and 0.18 hectares of Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaumonts. Their single site Bourgogne from Les Champs d’Argent is also worth a special mention. Gerald Cacheux is the fourth generation and his wines are hand crafted from old vines and judicious use of new oak. They have a beautiful purity. This is a domain to watch, although if you stop and look too long you will miss out!

The History: The René Cacheux & Son vineyard is a small family estate in Vosne-Romanée, passed down through four generations. It began with François Blee in the early 20th century and expanded under his son Charles. In 1966, the estate was divided, and Jacqueline, Charles’ daughter, founded the René Cacheux-Blee vineyard with her husband. Their son Gérald, after years of winemaking experience, took over in 2004 and now leads the estate.

Tasting Note: Toast venison with redcurrant jus, beef Wellington, or herb-crusted lamb. It also complements game pie, duck breast with blackberry sauce, or slow-roasted pork belly. For cheese, try Stilton, Tunworth, or a well-aged Cheddar.
